One phrase from Ways of Seeing by Berger that really struck me was “Men act and Women appear.” This statement sums up the point that women are being objectified and their only purpose is to be looked upon. I completely agree that by objectifying women we are taking their power away from them and putting it into the eyes of the viewer. This notion cancan be dangerous if accepted as the norm. Which in those times it was. In the times Berger was referring to it was a very real understanding of how women should be treated. In the times of the renaissance women were only worth the image they had to keep. In todays day and age it seems we have grown from those views a great deal, however our mainstream media still has a striking resemblance to the paintings of the renaissance and the notion of objectifying women in the media.
