Ways of Seeing
In the article "Ways of Seeing" a certain sentence caught my attention. "Women are there to feed an appetite, not to have any of their own." This was said in relation to the nude European paintings of women designed to be seen for the interest of a man. The image is not for the woman to feel good or confident as a naked female it is created to let a males imagination run wild with how he wishes to perceive her. After reading about this all that came to my mind was how our society does the same thing today. Playboy magazine was the first thing to come to my mind. It was created to show a naked woman and let the male look and send his imagination running. The magazine is not created to empower women, it is created to entertain men. Women are photographed in order to feed that appetite of a males desires. The women in the photos may be proud and confident but they give up their image to the male minds. My point is nude photography can still be seen as a way of giving yourself up for someone else's viewing. Woman not doing it for themselves, they do it for the entertainment of others.

Kayla, I agree with your response. You often hear men saying, like in playboy, that the pictures are "tasteful" to try to convince the public that the women aren't being objectified. In reality, this magazine was created by a man for men, and any way the photo is taken, it is for the man's pleasure. The woman remains the object of the man's eye, no matter how one tries to justify this.
ReplyDeleteKayla, I really like the example you gave about the play boy magazine, i didn't look at it in that way. Your 100% right that playboy magazine is just made for the mens eye and it gives women a bad reputation. The women give up their self respect to make men happy. No women should be used in this way!
ReplyDeleteKayla I agree 100% with what you are saying! As well as with Allie and Taylor in their comments. Using Playboy as an example really made me see it a little more clearly. Any way you look at a magazine like that you are objectifying women, but to a man is considered and art. I still think that women should not expose themselves in ways like this just to be please a man.

Besides just in adult magazines like Playboy, we can also see this in everyday advertising and media. Women are often used as props to facilitate selling an item or decorating a man.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you brought this point up women do not pose nude to empower other women at all; they do it for male attention and for others to desire them and that is wrong. Reverting back to the first set of articles about women and equality and what strategies we need to take to establish equality, these magazines and ads are apart of that strategy. Women need to stop letting themselves be made into objects by these magazines.
